Apply Primer or not?

Updated: Jan 10, 2019

I am lucky enough to restore many beautiful pieces of furniture. This time I bought this solid pine chest of drawers. It looked perfect till I saw bit of peeled vernish on the top. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the unhappy part but that is ok.

This piece will be for sale. Selection of color for flipping furniture is massively important. This time I choose beautiful pale light blue called Reykjavik from L’ESSENTIEL BOTANICS Ultimate Finish Mineral Paint. This color is one of populer color among to my clients as well as furniture painters.

Back to the topic, The loose paint, stain or rust need to be sanded for beautiful finish. I did sand the part and ready to flip this piece. Well, L’ESSENTIEL BOTANICS Ultimate Finish Mineral Paint DO NOT requite sanding before paint but this time I did it for the reason. Now I am bit concerned if the part I sanded bleeds. If you are painter like me, you may experienced faced blotchy ugly stains or bleed through appear after you’ve applied your coat/s of paint or sealer.

Then when do we want to use stain blocker? If you paint over cherry, mahogany, knotty pine, vintage piece of furniture or bare softwoods, I higly recommend to use stain blocker.

There are two solutions. Applying oil base shellac base primer. You can buy it from Bunnings. It works good. Due to oil based product, it has strong odour. Yes it smell really bad and I feel bit sick from the odour. Also you don't want to use your quality brushs for this product as it is not easy to clean brushes. I use chap brush or roller and throw them in the bin. I had few issues with this oil based primer with furniture paint. Pint doesn't stay on the surface well due to oil based primer surface is very shiny, paint slide over the surface. Also this type of primer texture is thick, it means it's bit hard to control leveling so you may face lots of rush stroke when it dried.

I used to use this type of primer till I met L’ESSENTIEL BOTANICS All In One Base Coat. Why do I use L’ESSENTIEL BOTANICS All In One Base Coat now? Well, the main reason why I use the product is, it is water base. Yes it is a WATER BASE STAIN BLOCKER! It is a dream product for me. I can use my high quality brushes to achive less brush stroke finish! It is very important for me. Also it has no odour, it means I can use it indoor too. Good bye to strong odour. Because my workspace is indoor, L’ESSENTIEL BOTANICS All In One Base Coat changed my work prep work. Apart from sanding, I can do all my work indoor. Wet wearther? who cares! I can apply primer inside of our house!
